classic Schomburg WWII Nazi cover
Who would have thought anyone would be nostalgic for a war? Yet, that's kind of what's happened in recent years, with the garish, apocalyptic propaganda of WWII looking like a solid alternative to the perpetually aggrieved, hopelessly fragmented nature of modern life. Sure, it wasn't all as "gang's all here" as it might be portrayed in the popular imagination, but latter-day audiences clearly respond to the bombastic, patriotic certainty of the type Alex Schomburg turned out regularly for Timely's parade of pro-Allies comics during the dog days of the Second World War. This startling example, featuring little digs at Goring and company, is a prime example of the hyper-detailed, frantically busy worlds of wonder Schomburg could conjure up without breaking a sweat, and it's little wonder that comics fans and wartime memorabilia collectors continue to repond to this kind of hyperactive cartoonistry.
