Artist Information
Steven Jay Hughes (February 12, 1954 – February 18, 2000) was a highly influential American comic book artist for Chaos! Comics. Hughes provided the art for many of the company's flagship comics, including Lady Death and Evil Ernie. He played a crucial role in creating the signature look and visual tone of these characters, helping to define the aesthetic of the independent comic scene in the 1990s.
Beyond comics, Hughes had a diverse artistic background, including painting portraits, creating murals, and working as a medical illustrator. His work on Lady Death, in particular, brought a striking, vivid presence to the character, greatly contributing to her cult status and success. Hughes’s dark, dynamic art style remains iconic, and his legacy endures through the beloved characters and artwork he created. Though he sadly passed away in 2000, his influence continues to be celebrated by fans and collectors, and his original art remains highly sought after by collectors.
