Jack Burnley COVER; origin & 1st app. of Mr. Mxyzptlk; COMIC BOOK IMPACT rating of 8 (CBI)Mr. Mxyzptlk (or, as originally named here, “Mxyztplk”) has long been a bee in Superman’s bonnet. Since his inception in this very issue, the prankster — part comedy relief, part malignant threat — has been a fan favorite in Man of Steel lore. While his appearance would evolve, the main conceits of his character, tormenting Supes with a variety of impish scenarios, and of course, his eventual defeat by being tricked into saying his name backward, thereby exiling him back to the fifth dimension for ninety days, have remained constant. While the main attraction in this issue is no doubt this premiere appearance, the cover is pretty iconic as well, with the dual likenesses of Superman and Clark Kent the cover, with the titular hero playing cuckold to the intrepid reporter with a snap of Lois Lane’s fingers, that gives this issue a second layer of collectible cool.
