August, 1929. "The Shadow King" by Robert E. Howard (First appearance of King Kull); PULP IMPACT rating of 8 (PI)
nice solid copyThe August 1929 issue of Weird Tales contains the first appearance of Robert E. Howard's classic character King Kull in "The Shadow King". Although Kull would only go on to star in three stories before Howard's death in 1936, he would go on to feature in many more Howard stories, and later Howard-inspired media, including books, comics, shows, and movies. Kull was the direct forerunner to Howard's most successful character Conan the Barbarian. The first Conan story, published in a 1932 issue of Weird Tales, was originally a rejected Kull story, and then the central character was rewritten to become Conan. The first appearance of Kull makes this a landmark key issue and a welcome addition to any pulp collection.
