It’s difficult to explain to a person who didn’t grow up in the 1970s just how big of a celebrity Bruce Lee was and the influence he had on popular culture, igniting a craze for martial arts that would saturate through film, TV, books, posters, advertising, and yes, even comics. The popular TV show, “Kung-Fu,” was a hot property at the time, and the minds at Marvel decided to try and cash in on the trend by licensing the series, but they were turned down, so as a backup plan they acquired the rights to Sax Rohmer’s pulp villain, Fu Manchu and other characters from his literary universe. By adding a son to the established mythos, Marvel revitalized a popular franchise from the past, while creating a property all their own in Shang-Chi. Considered one of the top physical fighters in the Marvel universe, the Master of Kung-Fu has now appeared in his own MCU feature, with Simu Liu as the iconic martial artist. Special Marvel Edition #15 is the first appearance of Shang-Chi and has been anointed a new Bronze Age key thanks to the incredible success of the MCU and the influence it exercises over the comic book marketplace.
