World's Best Comics #1 is a beloved Golden Age rarity as the only copy of this title — which would become the long-running World's Finest with its second issue! The runaway success of the 1939 and 1940 New York World's Fair Comics had prompted DC to launch a quarterly compilation title with many of the same features — resulting in the first major superhero anthology comic to be published regularly. There would be few variations to the formula as World's Finest went on to run for nearly 50 years. World's Best Comics #1 also boasts the first joint appearance of DC's "Big Two" (that being Superman and Batman) on the same cover of a newsstand comic. The two had shared the cover of the 1940 New York World's Fair Comics, but that had mostly been sold onsite at the event. This is the issue that gave kids across the country a major thrill at the local corner stores.
