Detective Comics #400 was already set to be a milestone issue, but DC really delivered with the first appearance of a wild new Batman villain in "Challenge of the Man-Bat!" The inspired creative team of scripter Frank Robbins and penciler Neal Adams — with inks by Dick Giordano — created an epic tale of zoologist Kirk Langstrom. The ambitious scientist is working late at the Gotham Natural History Museum when he injects himself with a new serum that's meant to enhance human senses via a specialized bat gland extract — and then mutates into the Man-Bat while also becoming one of DC's biggest Bronze Age stars!
Denny O'Neil and artist Gil Kane provide an equally creepy setting for their backup story of "A Burial for Batgirl," as Barbara Gordon arrives at Hudson University to help with an Edgar Allen Poe Festival; She discovers a murder and captures Hank Osher as her lead suspect, only to investigate further and find herself being sealed alive behind a brick wall!
