X-Men #5 follows the youthful super-squadron through one of their many confrontations with their main nemesis, Magneto, and his Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. While investigating a potential mutant discovery, the X-Men stumble into a trap set by Magneto, but, his evil plot is thwarted by the Scarlet Witch, who is not willing to commit murder for her leader, foreshadowing her eventual conversion to the good side of the Marvel universe. After making a hair-raising escape from Asteroid M the X-Men return to their mentor, who is apparently pleased with their progress and informs them they have passed their finals and have graduated from the academy.
