This is one of the wartime covers that transcends its time period to become a classic, with appeal that reaches far beyond its era. Although there was not much that can actually be considered "fun" about WWII and the atrocious loss of human life it caused, this cover is about as freewheeling as any of the period could be. Captain America Comics covers were renown for their chaotic violence, but this Syd Shores cover perfectly captures a moment in time, as Bucky and Cap plummet toward the earth in the middle of a pitched airborne battle. The constantly imperiled sidekick is strapped to a bomb as the First Avenger dives in to rescue his compatriot. Need I go on? Pure classic Marvel WWII mayhem.
