The creators were inspired Douglas Fairbanks' portrayal of Zorro, Lee Falk's comic strip The Phantom, Leonardo DaVinci's ornithopter (glider) blue prints which had large bat-like wings, the film the Bat Whispers and the mystery novel The Circular Staircase. In May of 1939 DC hit pay-dirt again with one of the most memorable and Iconic fictional characters in history, Batman! Batman's secret identity is Bruce Wayne, a wealthy industrialist, playboy, and philanthropist. Witnessing the murder of his parents as a child leads him to train himself to physical and intellectual perfection and don a bat-themed costume in order to fight crime.
