METRO SPOTLIGHT: PRESENTING THE CHARLESTON COLLECTION!

THE CHARLESTON COLLECTION IS NOW AVAILABLE!!

"Going through this collection brought me back to the old glory days of comic collecting," says Metropolis Sales Director Frank Cwiklik. "Back in the old days, collectors used to vie for complete runs and thought more like scholars and conservators of classic comics, just like the fan who put together this run. I had an absolute blast getting these books together for our buyers, and I think DC fans and Silver and Bronze Age connosieurs are going to love this stuff!"

Cwiklik is talking about the wonderful new collection being unveiled by Metropolis at the 2014 Javits Special Edition ComicCon this June, the Charleston Collection. Named after the West Virginia capital near where the collector once hailed, this incredible find boasts exhaustive runs of some of DC Comics' rarest and most collectible titles. From the Golden straight up through to the Copper Age, including extremely scarce war and horror issues that otherwise never come to market, and some of the scarcest Wonder Woman issues of the Golden Age, this collection is a real find!

"The gentleman who built this run was a DC fanatic," explains Metro COO Vincent Zurzolo. "He was such a huge fan of the publisher that he became a regular on the letters pages of several DC titles, and was determined to build as complete a run as he could of his favorites." Starting his buying off the newsstands in the mid-1960s, the dedicated fan soon searched out back issues of Golden and early Silver Age issues to complete his run -- not an easy task in those pre-comic-shop days. "What's impressive is that he was building a run of rare Golden Age and tough 1950s DCs during the mid-60s, when it was nearly impossible to find a lot of this stuff, since cons and comic shops weren't even really a thing yet outside of major cities," Zurzolo continued. "But somehow he did it, including tracking down some of the toughest of Wonder Woman issues and early DC war issues that are really, really scarce. It's a true labor of love!"

"As a Wonder Woman fan, it was the early WWs that really got my heart pumping," said Cwiklik, "and not just because there was an issue 1 in the run. This collection boasts several of the scarcest, most demanded issues of the early series. Wonder Woman is probably the toughest of all the major Golden Age hero titles, and there are issues from the first few years that we've only ever found two or three copies of. Seeing gems like issue 6, which is the first appearance of Cheetah, really made my day!" While the majority of Charleston copies will be available for sale at retail on the Metro site, the early Wonder Womans, including issues 1 and 6, will be prominently featured in the next ComicConnect auction.

In fact, the Charlestons already have enjoyed a sneak preview at ComicConnect, as the Charleston copy of Action Comics #16, the third-highest copy known to exist, is closing at this week's Event Auction, along with several other Golden Age treasures. However, the rest of the collection will be unveiled at this month's Javits Special Edition New York ComicCon. "It's the perfect place to feature this kind of old-fashioned, charming collection," said Cwiklik. "ReedPop have deliberately designed this comics-only show to hearken back to the good old days of comic conventions, when fans would gather to talk comics, buy rare issues, hunt down cool treasures, and generally learn more about the great American art form. It will be a real treat to finally unveil this collection at this down-home, charming event, which perfectly complements the old-school style of the amazing run that this DC fan put together." The Metropolis booth at the June NYCC will feature a selection of highlights from the Charlestons, including the early Wonder Womans, rare early Supermans, a CGC 5.5 Adventure 247, and several early scarce DC war books. "The war titles are the other real gem," Cwiklik continued. "He somehow put together nearly-complete runs of all the major DC war anthologies, which is no mean feat, as they are all really tough series to get runs of. War collectors are going to love this!"

The Charleston books will go on sale on Metro's site simultaneous with their unveiling at the NY show, June 14th and 15th. Customers with want lists on file will be receiving notifications in coming weeks of rare highlights from the collection that match their wants, and further inquiries may be made by calling 212 260 4147 x10, or emailing us at [email protected].
